Both pellet stoves and wood stoves heat your home with renewable fuel – but they suit different needs and habits. Here are the differences that decide the choice.
Pellet stove – even heat with automation
A pellet stove feeds fuel automatically from a hopper and is controlled by a thermostat, often with a timer or app. You get even heat around the clock without carrying wood or lighting fires manually. Pellets come in bags, are easy to store and have consistent quality. Keep in mind that the stove needs electricity for the feed and fan, and the fan is faintly audible.
Wood stove – living flames, no electricity
A wood stove gives the classic experience: crackling wood, living flames and fast radiant heat. It works entirely without electricity – reassuring during power outages – and wood is often the cheapest fuel, especially if you have your own supply. In return, you light, refill and handle wood and ash yourself.
Hybrid stove – both
Don't want to choose? A hybrid stove burns both wood and pellets. Burn wood when you are home and want the cosy fire, and let the pellet automation keep the house warm while you are away.
How the choice usually lands
Those who mainly want convenient, even base heating – for example in a house used a lot – often choose pellets. Those who value the cosy fire, independence from electricity and the lowest fuel cost choose wood. Many households end up with the hybrid.
